Overview

Plan to Eat is an online meal planner app that allows you to add and organize recipes (of your choice and from a variety of sources) and add them to your calendar and shopping list.

I was tasked to select an existing mobile application and redesign its looks and functionality.

Competitor Analysis

To best prepare for redesigning Plan to Eat, I looked to competitors to see what already existed. My main criteria for comparison was if these apps made it easy to find and plan recipes. In addition to this, I also analyzed which features worked well and what each app offered to their users.

Areas for Change

I knew I wanted to improve the typography hierarchy as well as simplifying the add to planner flow. The original app’s typography is all very similar and doesn’t have much contrast or variation in weights and sizes. The process of browsing for a recipe is not elegant and doesn’t draw the user in. I wanted to have a more interactive home page and a streamlined add to planner process. Below are screenshots of the original app.

Task Flow

The main task I targeted for my redesign was adding an existing recipe to the users’ planner. I found this task drawn out and lengthy in my audit of the Plan to Eat app and wanted to simplify this task flow.

Sketches

Before designing, I sketched low-fidelity wireframes to plan the layout for the screens. I chose to focus on a home page, recipe details page, and an add to planner page to complete my task flow.

High-Fidelity Screens

Lastly, I created high-fi screens from my sketches. I used a neutral and simple color palette to keep the app clean and focused on the images of food. I used the font matter for its modern and sleek characteristics. I designed a home page, recipe details page (consisting of overview, ingredients and directions), and an add to planner page.
